The Issue
Heated Rivalry has become a global juggernaut for its raw portrayal of queer romance between professional hockey players. It has broken ground on age-old issues that are presented in a fresh way and has created loyal fans, opened dialogue that is impacting individuals both inside and outside the hockey and sports arena, and has moved the needle on what great television and film can and should be. But for months since the show first aired, the fans and viewers of this show have been calling out the pervasive appearance of bigotry related to race, ethnicity, disability, gender/gender expression, and other forms of intolerance and exclusion. This petition is intended to open the dialogue and demand the creation of a transparent, sustained strategic action plan for DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility) and media accountability between supporters of the show, its cast and crew, the showrunners, and production and distribution companies. This is not a move to divide or expose the individual cast and crew; their professionalism and future endeavors are precarious when dealing with public call-in of this kind. They are entitled to preserve any current or future projects and opportunities as they and their management teams see fit. They are not being asked to speak up for the failures of Heated Rivalry's creators, producers, showrunners, and corporate bosses; the responsibility of maintaining a professional, psychologically and emotionally safe and creative working environment is completely on those employers. We, the fans and supporters of this show, correctively call-in the production and distribution companies Crave and Bell Media; the showrunners and producers Jacob Tierney, Brendan Brady, Lori Fischburg, Justin Stockman, Jigar Thakkar; consulting producer Rachel Reid; and cinematographer Jackson Parrell, as well as other leaders on the legal, publicity, and Human Resources teams including Jayme Alter, Ken Dhaliwal, Bob Tarantino, Lisa Ghione, Andrea Grau, and Alma Parvizian to hear the concerns of the Heated Rivalry fanbase and work with us and trained, credentialed professionals to develop a sustained and strategic DEIA and media accountability action plan that supports the important work this show can do for the entertainment industry and for the global viewing audience.
