To The Councillors,

We are writing to express our significant concerns regarding the proposed tram route along Roseburn Path from the perspective of a healthcare professionals working in the communities affected by the proposals. As healthcare professionals we have a responsibility to protect and promote the health of our population, and advocate for those who need this the most. Our concerns are for the long term implications for health and wellbeing from a public health and lifestyle medicine perpspective.

Green spaces for active travel

It must not be underestimated the essential role that green spaces and active travel routes play in the overall well-being of individuals, in particular the deprived populations living in close proximity to the suggested route. We believe that rather than disrupting this vital green corridor, the focus should be on preserving it as an essential resource for public health, especially for the local communities that rely on it.

Mind the gap

It is well-documented that individuals from more deprived socio-economic backgrounds face significant barriers to achieving good health, including limited access to physical activity opportunities and green spaces. We know from the Marmot report 10 years on that life expectancy in our more deprived areas have not only stalled but are decreasing. The proposed tram route directly threatens to remove or reduce access to a well-established, freely accessible green space that many of the local population, particularly those in lower-income areas, depend on for daily physical activity.

Physical Activity for all

Physical activity is one of the most effective interventions to prevent, manage and in some cases reverse chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders, all of which are increasing, often simultaneously. Green spaces provide a natural environment for many forms of simple exercise, stress relief, and social interaction, all of which are critical for improving health outcomes and quality of life. Disrupting or removing this space disproportionately affects the most vulnerable members of our community, who may not have the same access to other areas for exercise or recreation.

Preserving urban green spaces

These green areas should be seen as vital infrastructure for public health, especially for deprived populations living in close proximity to the proposed tram route. If we are truly committed to reducing health inequalities, we must prioritize the preservation of green spaces that provide essential opportunities for exercise and well-being. To remove this resource in the name of an infrastructure project risks exacerbating the health gap and further disadvantaging already marginalized groups.

The goal - Reducing car journeys

While the tram system may contribute to reducing car use and traffic congestion, this should not come at the expense of losing spaces that foster active travel and encourage healthier lifestyles. If the focus of the project is genuinely to improve the health and well-being of the population, it must prioritize the preservation of these green routes, which are integral to the physical and mental health of residents, especially those who are most at risk.

Call to action

We urge you to reconsider the proposed tram route along Roseburn Path and continue to innovate and explore alternatives that will safeguard this essential space for walking, cycling, and community well-being. We must ensure that urban development projects align with the goal of reducing health inequalities and enhancing access to public health resources for all, regardless of socio-economic background.

We trust and hope that the wider public health considerations will be given when continuing with your consultation.

Yours Sincerely
