I don't advise any junior doctor to approach the media. This is contrary to advice given by UK whistleblowing groups. The media is a double edged sword and often use language that may inflame various political agendas leading you to be investigated by the GMC.
Many doctors are of the view that the GMC cannot investigate without telling the doctor. Unfortunately, this is untrue. The rules gives the GMC powers to investigate secretly. These days you will normally find out by accident when Human Resources in a new job fax the GMC for clearance and it stops you getting a new job.
The media will not care about your employment difficulties because most journalists don't understand the way medical careers and jobs work in the junior doctor world. Few can be bothered about finding out.
The GMC will collect media appearances by the doctor. I know this from my own file as well as other doctors. It is not unknown for the GMC to start disapproving of types of language used. This should be borne in mind when rants on Facebook appear un newspapers. Keep your language polite and your arguments logical. If you believe the GMC has any concept of free speech then you really don't know them at all. If you do get into trouble at the GMC, they will always refer to the Medical Act which is far more important in their eyes.
If you are dealing with whistleblowing, learn your policies, procedures and keep records of everything you do. Try to keep out of the media unless you are leaving medicine. Work on tactically winning at every forum no matter what reprisal falls in your way. Understand that vindication comes from being clever not by bleating to the media.
If in doubt of your future, don't whistleblow. The public like matrydom but its not a pleasant experience for any junior doctor. Lastly don't be under the illusions created by the Bristol and Shipman Inquiries. The paperwork and media may be upbeat but the reality in medicine is the same as it always was. No junior doctor has survived whistleblowing unscathed. Try not to compare yourselves to senior whistleblowers who parade in the diva media world. Most of them haven't a clue how to fight a junior doctors fight. They are often spoilt by their own sense of self importance, their own inability to see past their own problems and their need to equate media features with constructive progression. You win and vindicate yourself by methodical hard work and be keeping your head and wits about you.
