Health Care Providers: Tell the Senate to Stop their Health Care Repeal Bill

Dear Senators:

We are doctors and health care providers who see taking care of patients as a moral calling. We provide compassionate health care to all patients who need it, we use evidence to treat them, and we provide care that is in their best interests.

Many of us provided care before the Affordable Care Act (ACA). We remember when insurance companies put lifetime caps on coverage, leaving patients to choose between necessary care and financial ruin.  We remember when insurance plans could decline to cover essential services like maternity care and when patients could not get coverage because of a preexisting condition such as epilepsy. Too many patients did not realize that the health insurance they had paid dearly for left them under insured until they were facing bankruptcy from an unplanned health crisis.

Our patients cannot afford to go back. But the Senate health care repeal bill will do just that. It allows states to eliminate protections for patients with preexisting conditions, guts Medicaid, and doesn’t require the basic care that people need to stay healthy.

Covering essential health services, including preventive care, helps people live healthier lives. Thanks to the ACA, our patients have thrived. They can seek preventive health care because of their comprehensive insurance.  They have birth control coverage that allows them to time a pregnancy, maternity coverage for the birth, and pediatric care for their baby. Before the ACA, our patients didn’t always have coverage for the birth control that worked best for them. Childbirth was not always covered and well-child visits and immunizations often had high out-of-pocket costs. Eliminating these benefits would be calamitous for families.

Another disaster for the health of the nation would be to forever alter Medicaid. For over 50 years, Medicaid has served low-income people including senior citizens, people with disabilities, and children – people who need more health care coverage, not less. Thanks to the ACA and the expansion of Medicaid, nearly 20 million more people are insured today, but the Senate health care repeal bill would cut Medicaid nearly in half. It is unconscionable that Congress would take away desperately needed public health dollars from our most vulnerable to provide tax breaks to the wealthy, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies.

We ask the Senate to listen to the evidence. Dozens of medical organizations like Physicians for Reproductive Health, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Nurses Association, the Academy of Family Physicians, and others oppose the Senate health care repeal bill because it will make our country less healthy. It will destroy the progress our patients, indeed our country, has made under the Affordable Care Act. Please work to improve health care access for all and abandon the fundamentally unfair and harmful framework of the health care repeal bill. America is counting on you.

If you are a doctor or health care provider, please join us by signing this petition and calling on your Senators to stop the health care repeal bill.
