Revise FMT's use for conditions besides C. difficile in Canada
The Issue
Currently, Health Canada has approved Microbiota Transplant (FMT) for use only in cases of C. difficile infection. Health Canada's last revision on FMT is outdated considering recent publications. Trials have revealed findings that FMT can be safe and beneficial for those looking to lessen symptoms related to diagnosis such as Autism or IBD.
FMT may not be a cure-all, but those who desire it deserve safe access in order to improve their health potential. Instead, as things stand, it has been decided that that patients are not responsible enough to make their own decisions regarding FMT use and their bodies. The truly motivated are seeking out their own donors and doing DIY versions, which do have the potential to be dangerous if screening and health practices are not taken seriously.
We can look to private clinics in the UK and Australia to see examples of safe screening and use of FMT. These clinics have operated for a decade or more without death or other severe incidents.
Health Canada needs to reconsider their current stance on FMT with the inclusion of recent publications as well as citizen input. Let’s follow the lead of the UK and make FMT a prescribed medicine for conditions besides C. Difficile.
