Limit the daily value of sugar eaten in foods in Canada by half the current amount. Health Canada needs to establish a daily value for sugar by listing sugars in teaspoons-not grams-on food labels NOW and not with a five year implementation period.
The Issue
As of March 2015, the World Health Organization's new guidelines recommend adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. A further reduction to below 5% or roughly 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits. As food sold in Canada is measured in metric, many people don't realize that a single can of Coke has 10 teaspoons of sugar in it (42 grams) Health Canada does not have specific recommendations in terms of teaspoons or grams per day of sugar Canadians should consume. Sadly, according to Statistics Canada, in 2004, the average Canadian consumed 26 teaspoons of sugar per day. This is wrong. Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Minister Rona Ambrose need to know that Canadians deserve to know how much sugar is in our food now. Health Canada has "no formal deadline" to publish final nutrition label guidelines, and it has proposed that businesses can take up to five years to implement the changes. Changes must be made now.
