There are 44 million people living in Ukraine. People, who have the same cast of mind, as the 450 million citizens of the European Union. The call for Ukraine to join the EU has been around for a long time. Although Ukraine would be the perfect candidate for EU membership in terms of democracy, human rights, economic development and other important factors (particularly considering the other states currently going through the EU accession process), the EU has so far closed their minds to Ukraine's accession. The main reason for the EU's reticence has probably been to appease Russian President Putin.

This week we had to see what it leads to when you try to please Putin. The democratic and sovereign Ukraine has been plunged into misery due to the will of one little man.

In the course of history we have had to witness often enough, that appeasement policy does not work to conciliate megalomaniac and inhuman dictators.

Therefore, it is high time to do the right thing, to listen to one's ideals and to do justice, even if it means putting oneself in a dangerous position for a short time. Ukraine must be allowed to join the EU now. Waiting until Putin has brought Ukraine under his control and the next step is to attack the EU is not the right strategy. It is time for the EU to fulfill its role as a defender of democracies.
