Hazelwood West Homecoming

The Issue

Early this morning, Thursday September 16th, there had been an email sent out to students stating their would be no homecoming dance. But there would still be a homecoming game, Spirit Week, Homecoming court, and a Virtual Pep Rally. The issue I’m trying to address is how important it is to students to have a homecoming dance. During the school year 2020-2021, they announced there would be no homecoming dance as well and only seniors could attend prom, and no extra guests. Last year covid had played a major role in schooling as well as any additional activities. However, administration made it possible to have a senior prom last year when covid was more viral and before many people had got vaccinated. Since then, there has been several people that have been vaccinated and it is very unfair to not have a homecoming. Class of 2022 hasn’t gotten to experience a school dance in 2-3 years. And homecoming was something most people have been looking forward to. Now to learn, there won’t be one not even for students that are fully vaccinated. The beginning of 2021 school year students began to return to school, wearing masks, as well as all sports starting where last year left off. Also in classrooms, many students have been taking the precautions such as wiping desks, wearing masks, staying in assigned seats and etc. Yes, there has been cases where students haven’t worn mask properly but the fact of the matter is, students were allowed to return to school and be in contact with hundreds of people. Regardless of whose vaccinated or not, everyone deserves a great. Homecoming is a celebration! Since the beginning of Covid, it has been overwhelming and students need a night to celebrate their accomplishments TOGETHER. Why is homecoming out of the picture? Class of 2022 has had many setbacks missing the end of their sophomore year, all of their junior year activities, now there won’t be a homecoming. Will Prom get taken away as well?
