SOVEREIGNTY FOR NATIVE HAWAIIANS

The Issue

Since the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai`i in 1893 by proponents of the United States of America, Native Hawai`ians have lacked a central, sovereign governing body singularly controlled and perpetrated by the Native Hawai`ian people. Supported, but never realized, by governing bodies within the U.S. Government including the Office of Hawai`ian Affairs, such an establishment would begin to heal the economic, educational, and cultural wounds caused by the illegal overthrow and subsequent oppression experienced by the Hawai`ian people.

Hundreds of Federally-recognized Native American tribes have achieved a degree of self-governance because of ratified treaties with the U.S. government. The nature of the overthrow did not allow for any relationship between the Native Hawai`ian People and the U.S. Government which is direct in violation of procedures mandated by U.S. Federal Law.

Therefore, the establishment of a Federally Recognized Governing Body for Native Hawai`ians, by Native Hawai`ians, is an overdue act of retribution for colonization. It serves the purpose of organizing the goals of Native Hawai`ians into a modern, purposeful sovereignty, independent of the influences of non-native residents of Hawai`i. It will give legal viability to reclaiming and protecting stolen land, creating and supporting effective cultural and linguistic immersion for disaffected youth of native ancestry, and fostering a mutual relationship with the Hawai`i State and U.S. Governments.
