Repair the Kolekole bridges now!
The Issue
The complete closure of Kolekole Park bridges has severely impacted residents of Kaiwiki Homestead Road and Kanna Road/Chin Chuck Roads. Kaiwiki Homestead residents and farms experience greatly curtailed access to their properties, and Kanna/Chin Chuck residents/farms are subject to exponentially increased traffic, threatening the safety of pedestrians, children, and pets.
Perhaps most ominously, the use of Kanna Road as a detour requires heavy traffic volumes to use an extremely narrow county lane that crosses a culvert with a steep drop-off and - most importantly— funnels vehicles onto a rickety wooden bridge. That bridge— infamously known as “Puka Bridge” — is so named because it suffered severe damage in the past from an overweight vehicles and was closed for years. Huge delivery trucks have already ignored the bridge’s 6-ton weight limit since the detour began, and it is a matter of time before the bridge is damaged or destroyed and a driver suffers injury or death.
The county MUST accelerate the repair of the Kolekole bridges to resolve this untenable situation and to prevent otherwise inevitable infrastructure damage, injury, and even death.
