Yesterday was a tiring but exciting day. As we headed off from Accrington I noticed that overnight the signature total had tipped the 99,000 mark and we were heading for 100,000! We travelled along the M65, then M6 and then the M5 South towards Gloucestershire and almost three and a half hours later, met up with a James Brown, Chief Exec of ‘Mobiloo’, or ‘Mr Mobiloo’! It was a real privilege to meet James and his wife and to hear of their enthusiasm and energy for Mobiloo, and it was great to see inside one of the newer vehicles and try out the hoist and bench! They are amazing vehicles. More about my visit in a future update... Of course, the journey home, although straight forward and in good weather, was another three and a half hours along the same route. As with all my recent motorway journeys we passed service stations of every brand... Moto, Welcome Break, Road Chef and, the relatively new, eco friendly and very welcoming Gloucester Services, operated privately by Westmorland. Having never visited this one before and hearing so many good things about it, we stopped here for a meal and drink. It was very spacious and the food looked great. The toilets were well signed and very clean, modern sinks with sensor taps, Dyson hand dryers ... and there were a number of separate family/baby changing rooms and even a larger room identified as a family disabled room. We waited for it to be vacated and then confidently ventured in. Imagine our disappointment, yet again, to discover that in spite of the wider door, extra space, grab rails etc, the only changing area was a fold down 2 foot 6” plastic baby changing shelf! I was so annoyed and frustrated because here was a very new and modern facility with plenty of space, multiple family rooms, but still no Changing Place for disabled children and adults or wheelchair users to be hoisted and changed. Why not? Were and disabled travellers consulted in the design process for this new Service Station? Why do they always assume that anyone who needs to be changed is shorter than 3 foot and light enough to be lifted onto and supported by a baby changing shelf!! Aaaarrrggghhh! So we completed our 350 mile round trip once again without passing an accessible Changing Place on route. Surely this is not acceptable. Ceri got so annnoyed last night that he decided to draft a design for a new motorway sign which could be displayed up and down the country where the service stations don’t provide accessible Changing Places. Maybe he should prin5 some off and send them out to all the service stations we have past! What do you think? If you agree with me that the current situation is not acceptable, please continue to share my campaign petition. Let’s get as many signatures to London as we can. And if you are able to, please write to, email, message or tweet your own local MP about it. There are already MPs on both sides of the House of Commons who are actively supporting me, so let’s make sure their voices are heard! More soon... hopefully when we have reached 100,000! Thanks again Zack
