The Issue

There is a secret horror under the saddles of dozens of emaciated, beaten, and abused horses and mules used to pack gear and carry tourists both up and down the canyon. While some of the 180 horses and mules used to carry people and gear are in moderate to good condition, about one-half of them are grossly underweight with open sores and bleeding wounds. You may not be able to see this, however, because their condition is often hidden under the gear, packs, and saddles.
A group of concerned citizens, led by Susan Ash of the Stop Animal ViolencE Foundation, is calling for a boycott on the use of horses and mules at Havasupai Falls because of rampant and egregious animal abuse that has been well-documented there since the 1950s. Most recently, our group has collected first hand accounts of the extreme animal abuse and neglect by the Havasupai tribe, violence against these animals that has brought to the attention of leaders there. Sadly, nothing has been done to change the awful circumstances for these animals.
We, the undersigned, heretofore agree:
1. If we visit Havasupai Falls, we will not, under any circumstances, use the pack horses or mules to take our gear in or out of the canyon. We commit to packing ourselves or using Airwest Helicopters.
2. We will not use any outfitter, or any company arranging our trip, if they are utilizing Supai pack horses or mules. We will not support businesses who profit from the violence perpetrated on the horses and mules at Havasu Falls.
3. Animal abuse is now a national top tier felony prosecutable by the Federal Bureau of Investigations. We commit, if visiting Havasu Falls, to document and report any and all animal abuse and neglect that we witness and reporting such abuse immediately to the FBI and other law enforcement and advocacy groups.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
