Black Renters Matter! Stop the 1625 Crenshaw eviction!
The Issue
1625 Crenshaw is being evicted! All 43 families living in this apartment building at Venice and Crenshaw in Los Angeles are being cleared out by new landlord and Las Vegas millionaire Haskel Iny.
The new landlord is trying to clear out poor black people to get higher-income people in to jack up the rent. This is a no-fault mass eviction. It is purely about greed and profit, at the expense of the current tenants, many of whom are elderly and expected to live out the final years of their lives in this building.
Haskel Iny is coming in and completely disrupting the tenants' ability to live out the rest of their years in the environment that they know, that they feel comfortable with, where they have friends and neighbors nearby, where they have services nearby. These residents say that they are not being treated like human beings, but are instead being moved out like pieces of furniture. That's why they say: black renters matter!
Many residents have already been forced out. At least three of those former residents are now homeless and seeking shelter. Those who are staying and fighting the eviction are facing incredible amounts of harassment from the property management company, stress, uncertainty and anguish.
But they have also been experiencing the solidarity of each others' support and the support of their neighbors as they stand united to face this threat to their community.
Read the full story about this terrible situation.
Haskel Iny, his company Lafayette Square Apt. LLC, and Power Property Management are responsible for a great deal of harm and suffering. The residents of 1625 Crenshaw hold them responsible for making right the damage they have caused to the tenants, their families and their neighbors. They demand that the tenants of 1625 Crenshaw receive a year and a half time to find new housing and move out, relocation assistance equal to what residents in a rent controlled apartment would receive (between $10,000 and $20,000 for most residents), an end to harassment from Power Property Management staff, and a thorough pest extermination, with residents put up in a hotel if it is necessary for them to vacate the premises during the extermination.
These changes will help the tenants of 1625 Crenshaw get a small measure of justice. But these evictions are happening across Los Angeles as gentrification displaces thousands of renters. LA's rent control law must be expanded and strengthened to prevent these evictions from happening in the first place.
The courageous tenants at 1625 Crenshaw Blvd. have formed their own coalition called the Residents & Tenants Action Coalition to push back against the growing displacement trend in Los Angeles and to protect themselves from Hasekl Iny's efforts to push families out of their homes in the name of profits.
