Hasina Must Step Down: Stand for Justice and Restore Democracy in Bangladesh

The Issue

Honorable Citizens of Bangladesh, Expatriates, and the International Community,

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to end the violence and restore democracy in Bangladesh.

Oppression Under the Current Regime
The people of Bangladesh, especially students and young citizens, are suffering under the current regime's oppressive actions. Peaceful protests against unfair civil service hiring rules have been violently suppressed by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), BGB(Border Guard Bangladesh), police, and the terrorist group Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), resulting in the deaths of at least 164 people(unofficially its more than 500) and injuring countless others. These victims include students demanding fair opportunities and justice.

Threats to Democracy and Civil Liberties
If the situation continues, Bangladesh will remain under authoritarian rule where dissent is silenced and democratic principles are ignored. The closure of educational institutions, the internet blackout, and the violent suppression of protests indicate a government more focused on supreme-power, illegal financial assets than serving its people. This violence and lack of accountability threaten our society, eroding trust in public institutions and civil liberties.

Government Isolation and Human Rights Abuses
The government has isolated the country from the world by shutting down the internet and mobile inter-networks to silence the oppressed and hide mass killings, engage in propaganda and abuse human rights. If Prime Minister Hasina is subjected to resign, it will pave the way for democratic reforms and justice restoration in our country, showing that Bangladeshis will not tolerate oppression and demand an interim government that respects human rights and freedom of speech.

Here is a list of evil doings so far under the regime of Sheikh Hasina’s Autocratic government.

  1. Election Fraud and Corruption: The Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) has ignored fair and inclusive elections. A sham election with virtually no opposition was held on January 5, 2014. The 2018 general election displayed widespread corruption, intimidation, and fraud, and the same pattern is seen in the 2024 election, further undermining democracy in Bangladesh.
  2. 2009 BDR Mutiny: On February 25 and 26, 2009, a mutiny led to the deaths of 74 people, including 54 top-level army officers. Some allege this event was part of a plan to secure Sheikh Hasina's grip on power by weakening the military's historical political role.
  3. 2013 Shapla Square Protests: In May 2013, Hefazat-e-Islam organized protests that saw a crackdown by security forces during Operation Shapla. Allegations of numerous deaths emerged, with the government temporarily shutting down electricity, internet, and mobile networks during the operation at night.
  4. 2018 Road Safety Protests: From July 29 to August 10, 2018, students demanding improved road safety faced harsh government responses, including violence and casualties among protesters, many of whom were children and teenagers.
  5. Extrajudicial Killings: During the BDR mutiny trial, a witness identified Inspector Ali as the shooter of a major, with Inspector Das confirming the kill on December 2, 2021, allegedly under Sheikh Hasina's command.

These events have raised significant concerns about human rights and the government's approach to dissent. Sheikh Hasina's administration has faced domestic and international criticism for handling these incidents, with allegations of excessive force and suppression of political opposition.

Call to Action
Immediate action is crucial to prevent further loss of life and safeguard our nation's future. The escalating violence and repression show the urgent need for change. With the world's attention on Bangladesh, now is the time to demand accountability and democratic governance. Acting now will honor those who have sacrificed their lives and ensure their deaths were not in vain.

Prime Minister Hasina's use of state machinery to suppress dissent, including extrajudicial killings, has plunged the country into chaos. The internet and mobile network shutdowns suffocate the truth and deny people the means to organize and express grievances. This authoritarian grip on power must end to restore peace and democracy in Bangladesh.

We urge all citizens and global allies to stand with us in demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Together, we can bring about a just and democratic Bangladesh. The world must not ignore the suffering of the Bangladeshi people. It is time to act for justice and human rights.
