Hasbro's contract with Warner Bros. Discovery to NOT be renewed in 2025

Hasbro's contract with Warner Bros. Discovery to NOT be renewed in 2025
The Issue
In the past several years, Hasbro has made severely poor choices regarding their intellectual properties, especially My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the Equestria Girls series, by consistently removing them from streaming services and leaving them in the hands of Discovery Family (owned by Warner Bros. Discovery), making them less available to consumers.
According to the 2022 annual reports from both companies:
"The entertainment industry experiences frequent change driven by technological development and audience viewing preferences, including developments with respect to the formats through which films, television programming, and other episodic content are delivered to consumers. With rapid technological changes and dramatically expanded digital content offerings, the scale and scope of these changes have accelerated in recent years. For example, consumers are continuing to increase their access to television, film and other episodic content on streaming and digital content networks, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Paramount + to name a few. Similarly, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, some film releases continue to go direct to streaming channels as opposed to theaters or at the same time as theaters or have gone to streaming channels after only a short period of time in the theaters. Technological as well as other changes caused by the pandemic have caused significant disruption to the retail distribution of entertainment offerings and have caused, and could in the future cause, a negative impact on sales of our products and other forms of monetization of content, especially those which are reliant on box office success. We may lose opportunities to capitalize on changing market dynamics, technological innovations or consumer tastes if we do not adapt our content offerings or distribution capabilities in a timely manner. The overall effect that technological development and new digital distribution platforms have on the revenue and profits we derive from our entertainment content, including from merchandise sales derived from such content, and the additional costs associated with changing markets, media platforms and technologies, is unpredictable. If we fail to accurately assess and effectively respond to changes in technology and consumer behavior in the entertainment industry, our business may be harmed."
Who cares, Hasbro? There's nothing bad at all about streaming and digital content networks. And besides, it's not like retail distribution is even the norm anymore for movies and TV anyways. But either way, I believe this is what led to Hasbro ordering Netflix to remove all My Little Pony G4 content from their service, eventually leaving the service with just the first four seasons of Friendship is Magic in the U.S. and only the first season alone in most countries worldwide, with absolutely no other available options (at least according to JustWatch.com). In addition, Netflix has refused to release the last three specials in the Equestria Girls franchise or Rainbow Roadtrip, all from 2019. Because of this, there has been a noticeable decrease in the amount of dubs released for those specials, as Netflix exclusively hosted most of them, including French, German, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and among others. Not only that, Shout! Factory apparently still holds U.S. retail distribution rights for Hasbro's content, despite no longer producing new DVDs or Blu-rays for those properties. Seriously, why can't they just let go of their rights altogether?
"In September 2014, the Company (Hasbro) and Discovery (short for Warner Bros. Discovery) amended their relationship with respect to the Network (Discovery Family Channel) and Discovery increased its equity interest in the Network to 60% while the Company retained a 40% equity interest in the Network. In connection with the amendment, the Company and Discovery entered into an option agreement related to the Company's remaining 40% ownership in the Network. Hasbro had the right to put the entirety of its remaining 40% interest in Discovery Family to WBD at any time during the one-year period beginning December 31, 2021, or in the event the Company's performance obligation related to Discovery Family is not met. Embedded in the redeemable noncontrolling interest is also a Warner Bros. Discovery call right that is exercisable for one year after December 31, 2021. Neither the put nor call was exercised in 2022. In December 2022, Hasbro and WBD signed an amendment to the previous agreement extending the put-call election to the period January 31, 2025 to March 31, 2025."
During the time when Hasbro had the right to give up their 40% ownership of the channel in 2022 (but didn't), the Discovery Family GO! app was discontinued in May of that year, thus now requiring us to subscribe to a cable service to continue seeing Hasbro's content, which is super annoying, and in the last two years, Discovery Family even removed a ton of Hasbro's shows, including My Little Pony: Pony Life, which last aired regularly in September 2023. And last month, Fubo has completely removed all channels owned by Discovery Networks, including Discovery Family, making Hasbro's content even more inaccessible. Despite all these facts, plus the continued decline of subscribers, Hasbro is still refusing to budge.
Following these unfortunate events, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic now only airs on weekdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., which are all within school hours. It was removed from weekends after May 2024, with Looney Tunes (the same show that took Pony Life off the air for good) taking its place, leaving only the 60-minute specials still remaining on weekends, and further lessening the chance of the Equestria Girls movies or Rainbow Roadtrip airing on the channel.
As a result of the contract's renewal, some of Hasbro's shows have now stayed on the channel longer than any other show that has ever aired on there, the longest ones being My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Pound Puppies, both at 14 years, which is also half of the entire lifespan of the channel itself.
To sum it all up, Hasbro has:
1) Consistently failed to keep to normal standards of the entertainment industry
2) Forced limited availabilities of their content to people who are not interested in subscribing to them
3) Refused to listen to and ignored their subscribers
4) Done things that only supported their line of thought and did not allow other services to acquire their rights
And for all these reasons, I hereby request Hasbro to just give up their entire 40% ownership of Discovery Family Channel and officially end their partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery after that put-call election ends in early 2025 (admitting the fact that they'll just lose even more money if they stay there any longer), then find a new partner that has millions more subscribers than Discovery Family, so that newer generations of kids can watch and enjoy their shows anytime and anywhere, and potentially boosting up their revenue. Hasbro and Warner Bros. Discovery have 10 months from the writing of this petition to respond.
And for all you other petition creators, like Levi Yates and Jacob Hickerson, you need to understand that trying to force Hasbro into putting their shows back on streaming is not the best solution. It'll just cause even more negative effects to the company. The best way to making sure you get your favorite shows back on streaming is to first convince the copyright owners to end their partnership with another company that isn't doing them any good, and move them to another one. So do me a favor, close your petitions and sign this one.
UPDATE: This petition is no longer allowing any more new signatures because I am declaring defeat. Netflix just removed the last of Hasbro's pre-2020 shows, and all shows can now be found on Tubi. Moreover, Discovery Family's investments have to expire first before the shows can stop airing for good.
