Oppose the Conservatives in Parliament

The Issue

Dear Harriet Harman,

Today's appearance on Sunday Politics has damaged the party irrevocably. This government is the most hated since Thatcher and is attacking the most weak and vulnerable in society.

The lack of condemnation of these cuts and your stance on not opposing them will have severe consequences for the party and its future.

You have alienated yourselves from the electorate by distancing yourself from the working class in order to embrace more middle class voters. This strategy backfired at the last election and hence the amount of voters you lost to UKIP. The party's failure to challenge the austerity measures, the change of position on immigration and not defending your own economic record whilst in power is the reason you lost the election. Miliband may not have been the most media savvy politician, but I still believe in policies over personalities.

This move may well be the equivalent of Nick Clegg's decision to go into coalition with the Tories and will cost the party as dearly too. The people that voted for you in May are your core supporters, those that have always voted Labour. You risk alienating yourself from this group by not standing up to austerity measures. If you don't, I genuinely believe that this will cause a split in the party, and potentially the creation of a true socialist political party that does represent the masses.

Labour voters are seeing this party as "Tory Lite" and why would we want to vote for that. You are currently the opposition, so "oppose" and spend the next five years convincing the public and tackling the propaganda in the right wing press. Unite this country in opposing this government, champion the weak and vulnerable, explain why and how 40% tax payers should care about everyone in society and not just themselves.

You will never get elected by shifting to the right, it is already well occupied. Remember only 24% of the electorate voted Conservative.

If by some freak chance, you did manage to get elected by promoting a more conservative agenda, please ask yourself this: What was the point? To keep things as they are?

Being electable and being morally right are 2 very different things and are you not in a position where you could become everything you despise just for the sake of being in power.
