To change the name of Black Boy Lane, Tottenham N15
To change the name of Black Boy Lane, Tottenham N15
The Issue
Change the name of Black Boy Lane in West Green, Tottenham N15
On a short walk around the roads adjacent to my home in Tottenham, I noticed that one road was named 'Black Boy Lane'. Further research suggested that many roads across Britain still possess radicalised names based on institutionalised caricatures of African people. These roads should be renamed now.
If Britain is to reckon with its own horrific history of white supremacy and indentured slavery we must address all racism. Maintaining roads with names like 'Black Boy Lane' in a part of the country with one of the largest black communities is a visual representation of white supremacy that must be removed. It hurts me that my Council Tax bill will ultimately maintain a road named to caricature and ridicule people who look like me. The Government should 'explain or change' all racist road names particularly Black Boy Lane in Tottenham.
Tottenham has an incredibly large black community which makes it even more bizarre that this road name has persisted despite its clear racist connotations.
I implore the London Borough of Haringey to change the name outside of current procedures on the basis that the name is inherently racist and demeaning and should not be put to residents for a vote.
The road is also worryingly close to a primary school attended by a pupils from a diverse range of backgrounds. I consider the continued maintenance of the road name a direct safeguarding threat to these children who will spend their early education surrounded by the relic of white supremacy.
As a concerned resident of Tottenham, I ask that this road name be changed immediately. I would also like the London Borough of Haringey to accept that current procedures for changing roads names should be scrapped if the road name is clearly and inherently racist.
