Emma Chan started this petition to Haringey Council

Haringey is one of the worst sites for fly-tipping in the UK. Near my home in Tottenham I regularly walk past bags of dumped rubbish, furniture and other household goods on the streets.

Whilst all dumped rubbish makes our streets and our community look and feel less pleasant, abandoned fridges can be particularly hazardous. This is because the coolant chemicals from damaged or improperly disposed of fridges can be particularly environmentally damaging

If you're a Haringey resident, there is currently a charge of £20 to have large items collected - including fridges. By contrast, in several neighbouring Boroughs, this service is either free for all residents (Enfield and Camden), or lower with special provisions made for those on a low income (Hackney).

I do believe that we all have a responsibility to dispose of our rubbish in a safe and appropriate way... but I also strongly believe that this can only happen if our  Council provides us with appropriate and accessible waste services.

Exempting fridges from the charge would be a start towards providing this type of service.

Please join me in calling on Haringey Council to work to provide Haringey Residents with a free-at-point-of-use collection service to dispose of the potential hazard posed by fridges.
