Create a Secondary Road from Jefferson Highway for the Residential Redevelopment of the Former Colonial Country Club. This dedicated access road was recommended by a 2018 traffic study, but is not currently part of the developer's plans. Let's convince the city council to add this as a requirement in the newly proposed development agreement. We already have over 230 paper petition signatures as well!
This petition is NOT to stop the development from happening, nor is it intended to delay its progress. We actually believe the development will be a net positive for the city if done right. We’re just asking that this one amendment is added to the new agreement.
In April 2021, the city council introduced a restated Development Agreement which rescinds all prior agreements and has no provisions requiring a road for construction or residential traffic from Jefferson Highway onto the property. Without a provision like this, all infrastructure, construction, and residential traffic would be forced to come down Colonial Club and Riverside Dr.
Action Petitioned For: We the undersigned are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now on establishing a secondary road for ingress and egress from and to Jefferson Highway, dedicated for use during construction and for permanent access on the west side of the property for both commercial and residential developments and occupants.
Why start this petition?
My family and I moved here 3 years ago from North Louisiana. Neither my wife nor I are from Harahan and we could have chosen anywhere to settle down. We love it here and are proud to call it home.
Over the past year, we’ve had to deal with similar traffic for the TV production that happened at the clubhouse… including large commercial trucks coming and going late into the evening, sometimes even 18 wheelers. We didn’t complain because we knew it was a temporary situation and a money-maker for the city.
However, it definitely added a level of stress and affected the general safety of our 2 young boys, who like to ride their bikes with friends or play basketball in our driveway. I worry these trucks won’t see my children riding or crossing the street, given to how high the drivers sit... and I worry that… even if they do, they won’t be able to stop in time given the weight of the load in these vehicles.
Not to mention the added noise and potential damage to our streets and trees. We’ve experienced enough to know it can’t continue with this development agreement.
Without an explicit provision in place, this type of traffic will not only increase exponentially, but will likely occur daily for the next 10+ years given the scale of this development.
This isn’t just about the residents who live near Riverside or Colonial, it would affect all citizens of Harahan. Colonial Club Dr would become a road people avoid for the foreseeable future, which would be a shame because it’s currently a staple of our community.
