Hands Up For The Kimberley !
Dear Friend
The Hands Up For The Kimberley campaign is about engaging, educating and involving the community in appreciating the natural and cultural values of the Kimberley and taking action to protect this national icon into the future.
If you care about the fate of the Kimberley, register you support today - it's time to put your Hands Up For The Kimberley. By registering your support you will send a clear message to State and Commonwealth Government and multi-national fossil fuel companies such as Woodside, Shell and BP that the Kimberley is not for sale!
Put your Hands Up For The Kimberley to pledge support for peaceful community action opposing the industrialization of the Kimberley coast.
Put your Hands Up For The Kimberley to say you won't invest in Woodside or other companies that promote industrialisation of the Kimberley.
Your nickname (alias), area of residence (your privacy will be respected) and any comment you care to add will be included on the Hands Up! Map. We will also pass your comments on to relevant politicians and corporations.
The Kimberley region of northern WA is one of the world's great natural and Indigenous cultural regions. Its vast savannah landscapes, wild rivers, extensive wetlands, spectacular coast and rich marine environments provide a multitude of habitats that are home to an extraordinary diversity of species. The amazing wildlife of the region includes the recently discovered snubfin dolphin, humpback whales (which give birth on the Kimberley coast), gouldian finches, northern quoll and the golden bandicoot.
Incredibly, the far north-west Kimberley sub-region is the only part of Western Australia, and one of very few in Australia, that appears to have retained its complete native fauna species diversity without extinction since European settlement.
However, new plans for large-scale industrialisation including a proposal for a massive fossil fuel processing facility - together with climate change and the arrival of cane toads, which are expected this wet season - raise both the immediacy, and scale of threat. They will add to the regional impacts of a hundred years of mismanagement (as demonstrated by over-grazing by cattle and neglect), most visibly shown by uncontrolled wildfires, weeds and feral animals.
If these threats are not addressed urgently, the Kimberley is destined to become yet another region of Australia that we have allowed to be degraded from rich diversity... to impoverished wasteland.
The future of one of the world's last great natural areas will be decided in the coming months, if we lose this wilderness area now, we lose it forever.
The Kimberley thanks you for your support.
