The Issue

President Donald Trump is threatening one of the world’s most respected public broadcasters — and we need to say: enough.

Trump has publicly attacked the BBC, celebrated the resignations of its top executives, and now threatens to sue the British broadcaster for $1 billion over an editorial mistake in a documentary. This is not about accountability. It’s about intimidation.

The BBC made an error. It edited a speech in a way that misrepresented Trump’s remarks. The organization acknowledged the mistake and apologized. But Trump is using this moment to wage a broader campaign against public media — demanding resignations, posting inflammatory statements, and now trying to punish the BBC through legal action.

That’s not leadership — it’s political bullying. And it’s especially disturbing when aimed at a broadcaster from one of America’s closest democratic allies.

We call on Donald Trump to:

Immediately drop the lawsuit threat against the BBC
Stop attacking the BBC and its journalists in public statements
Respect the independence of global public media and stop using political power to silence criticism

The BBC has informed, educated, and served global audiences for over 100 years. It's one of the most trusted news sources in the world — especially in an era of disinformation and partisan spin. Weakening its independence is not just a U.K. problem — it's a threat to democracy everywhere.

No leader should be able to silence public journalism with threats and billion-dollar lawsuits. Not in Britain. Not in the U.S. Not anywhere.

Trump must back off the BBC — and stop trying to rewrite the rules of press freedom.

Add your name if you believe in independent journalism and a free press that can hold power accountable — without fear of political retribution.
