Hands Off E Jean Carroll: Drop the DOJ's Retaliatory Investigation Now
The Issue
The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into E Jean Carroll — the writer who accused Donald Trump of sexual assault and beat him twice in court. Juries found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation. Both judgments were upheld on appeal. Now, the DOJ is investigating whether Carroll committed perjury because she said in a 2022 deposition that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit.
The appeals court already looked at this. In 2024, the US Court of Appeals found that Carroll had "plausibly represented" that she had forgotten about limited outside funding — and that she was not involved in decisions about who paid her legal costs. The court ruled in her favor. The case was settled.
This investigation is not about justice. It is about revenge.
Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly called on the DOJ to prosecute his adversaries. The acting Attorney General who oversees this case personally represented Trump in his appeals against Carroll — and has now recused himself, raising serious questions about how this investigation was greenlit in the first place.
Using the DOJ as a weapon against a woman who held a president accountable in court is an attack on every sexual assault survivor who dares to speak up. We're calling on the Department of Justice to drop this investigation immediately.
