Removal of Jett Duffey from Hampton University's Athletic Program and Campus

The Issue

During 2017 Jett Duffey, student athlete for the Texas Tech football team, was found responsible for two counts of sexual misconduct by Texas Tech’s Title IX department, and in consequence was suspended from Texas Tech for two semesters. Jett Duffey tried to appeal his case to Texas Tech’s Title IX department, but the Title IX office held firm on their decision and upheld the ruling that Jett Duffey was in fact responsible.

After Jett Duffey’s appeal failed, he in return sued Texas Tech for violation of his due process rights concerning his case with the Title IX department. The civil suit was later dismissed on Jett Duffey’s request, and in the Fall of 2017 Jett Duffey was allowed back onto the football team. His suspension was served during the Spring and Summer of 2017, which in return had no impact on his football career being as it was during the offseason.

Two years later, in the Spring of 2019, Jett Duffey was accused of sexual assault by another student at Texas Tech. This accusation ended in mediation. A week after the mediation took place, Jett Duffey was promoted to starting quarterback for the Texas Tech football team, where he was enabled to finish the football season.

In December of 2019, Jett Duffey graduated from Texas Tech and entered the transfer portal in hopes to find a new home to continue his football career. His first unofficial commit was to Tulane University, whom after a period of time, officially denied him admissions due to academic issues involving his grades.

Jett Duffey’s second unofficial commit was to Central Michigan University. Once again, Jett Duffey was denied admissions. However, this time Jett Duffey was denied admission due to his reoccurring sexual assault allegations. CMU went on record stating that he was denied because CMU was “committed to the safety and integrity of all students.”

Recently, Hampton University has accepted Jett Duffey into their academic and athletic program. This petition was created to prompt the removal of Jett Duffey from Hampton University’s athletic program and campus.

Allowing Jett Duffey the privilege to be a student athlete, which puts him in a position of power, enables him with the opportunity to repeat his past behavior in sexually assaulting women. As proven before, universities have denied Jett Duffey admissions to protect their student population. Giving Jett Duffey the permission to physically attend a college campus, puts every student at risk. Jett Duffey should not be denied his right to further his education, but instead should be limited to online interaction with universities, for the safety and wellbeing of all other innocent and unaware students attending the university.

Sexual assault is a growing pandemic on college campuses worldwide. Failure to protect students reflects poorly on the University’s administration. Sexual assault is not only a physical violation of human rights, but has lifelong emotional and mental health consequences to victims.

Take the stand and sign the petition to remove Jett Duffey from Hampton University’s athletic program and physical college campus. Protect your right as a student, protect the right of your loved one, and protect the rights of every student who may become a victim to Jett Duffey.
