east hamilton dresscode debate
The Issue
Many student are wanting to see a change in our dress code and update it to new standards at East Hamilton High School, especially on behalf of young women. Students, especially girls, are being coded everyday for clothes that are “drawing attention to an individual rather than to a learning situation.” After the viral email was sent by an East Hamilton High School parent with regard to how our school does not offer an opt-out option for dress code as it does for masks, we feel the need to express our feelings about this debate as well. In the email written by a parent of a female student, she states, “I find the school’s dress code policy to be misogynistic and detrimental to the self-esteem of young women. … In light of the opt-out option related to the recently announced mask mandate, I can only assume that parents are now in a position to pick and choose the school policies to which their child to be subject…” We feel these statements are true, and we agree with this parent. If masks are to keep children safe and yet they are optional, then why is the biggest concern of this new school year whether you can see one’s shoulders? From what we have witnessed, administration seems to prioritize the comfort of teenage boys over young women and their ability to appropriately express themselves in the way they dress. It’s not that we don’t want to be covered, but we would like some freedom to wear what is comfortable to us. thank you for reading and please sign this.
