Halt Unregulated Rent Increases Permitted By Current Legislation

Halt Unregulated Rent Increases Permitted By Current Legislation

The Issue

The law that allows landlords to increase rents with no restrictions is causing undue hardship for many tenants. Renters live in a state of constant insecurity, awaiting the next surge that could render their homes unaffordable. Landlords have been capitalizing on this piece of legislation, using it to systematically abuse their right to adjust rent several times a year without consideration for the financial strain it puts on the tenants. We believe it is essential to bring an immediate halt to this exploitative activity. It is time we grant more protection to tenants and regulate the frequency and percentage by which landlords can increase rent. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, already, "an estimated 7.6 million households... are spending more than 50% of their limited income on rent."(National Low Income Housing Coalition, 2020). This showcases the urgency of the matter and thus, we plead with our legislative authorities to abolish landlords' unchecked power to abuse the rent increase law. Please sign this petition urging a law reform to establish reasonable and humane rent-control measures.
