Halt Unjust Impounding of Uber and Bolt Cars by Tshwane Metro Police Department

The Issue

My name is Obakeng and I share the plight of many others who have pursued a livelihood as Uber drivers. My car, our means to earn, has been impounded by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) for not having an operating license. However, I had already applied and paid for my license in August 2023. Over a year later, with no license in hand despite receiving a receipt and proof of payment, I am left helpless as my car remains under seizure. I am not the only one. Many Uber and Bolt drivers are being penalized unfairly due to the negligence of the Department of Transport. It's high time this injustice came to a halt.

Uber and Bolt have introduced a new economic reality for millions of people, providing employment opportunities that were previously unthinkable. Yet, these opportunities are being quashed unfairly and promptly by the TMPD. This dispute is not just about acquiring licenses; it is about the right to earn a living, about fairness, and about making sure that bureaucracy does not stand in the way of progress and individuals' prosperity.

We call on the TMPD to stop impounding cars due to the absence of an operating license when it's the Department of Transport's delay in issuing these licenses that's causing the problem. Furthermore, we demand the Department of Transport to expedite the process of issuing these licenses that have already been paid for. Our livelihoods are at stake.

Support our fight for a fairer system. Sign this petition to stop TMPD from unfairly impounding Uber and Bolt cars and to prompt the Department of Transport to issue our operating licenses promptly.
