Halt Unfit High-Density Housing Developments in West Kelowna

The Issue

As homeowners on Weatherhill Road in the Lakeview Heights neighbourhood of West Kelowna, we have been deeply invested in the dynamics and well-being of our community. We have lately encountered a concern that threatens the peace and balance of our neighbourhood and, potentially, EVERY neighbourhood in British Columbia under the new Provincial Government's Bill 44. A Bill which allows multi-family housing on any residential lot in this Province.

A recent purchase and planned re-development of one of the properties in our cul-de-sac has created an impending crisis. The new owner has applied to the City to rezone the property with a view to constructing medium-density housing for as many as twenty families. The developer has already denuded the property of all its old trees that provided land stability and a refuge for many beautiful and protected birds of prey.

Weatherhill Road, a small cul-de-sac that borders beautiful Kalamoir Park, currently has only fourteen homes. The proposed redevelopment would drastically increase the number of houses and consequently, the population density of our small community. But our neighbourhood, like many others, is not equipped to cope with such an increase. We lack the necessary infrastructure to support high to medium density housing, including sufficient access for residents and emergency vehicles, and adequate parking.

Such a density increase also stresses public services like water and waste management systems, potentially affecting the overall sustainability of the area.

Our neighbourhood is thus at the risk of having its character, safety, and sustainability being compromised. We believe in responsible housing development and urban planning, with full consideration of the capacity and characteristics of the neighbourhoods. Therefore, we urgently request the City of West Kelowna to meticulously scrutinize this rezoning application, considering the potential negative impacts on our community.

We, as affected residents, urge everyone to stand with us. Your signature could mean preserving the character and quality of life in our neighbourhood and many others like it throughout the Province of British Columbia. Please sign this petition.
