The Issue

Cheshire  is approaching a significant decision that will shape the future of our town. The municipality is currently considering the sale of publicly owned land to a private developer for a large-scale project directly adjacent to the Birch Drive neighborhood.

This proposed development is substantial, with plans that include industrial, residential, and transportation elements. If approved, it will bring major and lasting changes to an area currently characterized by its quiet, residential nature.

Key concerns include:

Increased Traffic and Congestion: The introduction of new infrastructure, particularly industrial and transportation-related components, is likely to result in heavier traffic flows that could overwhelm local roads and intersections.
Noise and Activity Levels: Industrial operations and increased vehicle movement threaten to disrupt the peace and quiet currently enjoyed by residents of Birch Drive and surrounding neighborhoods.
Impact on Property Values and Community Character: Large-scale developments of this nature risk undermining the residential character of the area and may negatively affect property values.

Projects of this magnitude require careful, deliberate consideration—not only of potential economic outcomes, but of the long-term implications for community livability, infrastructure capacity, and neighborhood cohesion. The residents of Cheshire deserve a transparent, inclusive decision-making process that fully weighs these factors.

We respectfully urge town officials to pause any actions related to the sale of this land until a comprehensive impact assessment has been completed and community input has been actively sought and incorporated. Responsible development is possible—but it must reflect the priorities and values of the residents it affects most.

We invite you to join us in requesting a more thoughtful, community-centered approach to planning for Cheshire’s future.
