Halt the Rezoning of Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area

The Issue

Like many of us, I've watched as the natural beauty of Florida has fallen victim to urbanization. Increasingly, we're seeing precious ecosystems like the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area being threatened by rezoning and subsequent development, jeopardizing the unique wildlife it harbors and the crucial environmental services it offers. Emeralda Marsh is a haven for over 240 species of birds, multiple endangered species and is of international significance as a major feeding, nesting and resting place for migrating waterfowl.

Emeralda Marsh also plays a critical role in improving our water quality. Wetlands like Emeralda Marsh act as a natural water filtration system, reducing pollutants and improving the overall water quality of surrounding bodies of water, including the Harris Chain of Lakes.

Our green spaces are not infinite. Once gone, they cannot be retrieved. The loss of these spaces walks hand in hand with a loss of identity for Floridians. The very essence of Florida, the allure for both residents and visitors, is intertwined with its natural beauty. To rezone and develop the Emeralda Marsh area would be a bitter blow to our unique Floridian heritage.

In Leesburg, we all know the value of natural beauty - it is intrinsic in our way of life. It's time to unite to protect Emeralda Marsh from rezoning, and the inevitable destruction that would follow. Let's ensure our future generations can experience this wilderness in the way we have cherished. Join us in petitioning the city to maintain the current zoning designation for the Emeralda Marsh. Together, we can save our little piece of Florida paradise. Please, sign this petition.
