Halt the Reduction of Speed Limits in Ireland

The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the recent proposal to decrease speed limits across Ireland. I feel that instead of ensuring public safety, this move could result in unnecessary expenditure on changing road signs and prompt riskier behavior leading to more traffic violations and accidents.

According to the Department of Transport, a total of 141 people lost their lives on Irish roads in 2020, with speed being a contributing factor. Yet, reducing speed limits dramatically might simply encourage impatient drivers to overtake dangerously, thereby escalating road safety risks.

The financial implications cannot be overlooked either. Changing existing speed signs will require significant resources, further stretching our national budget which could be directed to more pressing areas such as education, health, and social care.

With motorway safety and public funds at stake, I believe it's critical that we reconsider the reduction of speed limits in Ireland. It's important that our law enforcement and government employ a balanced and carefully-considered approach to road safety that doesn't compromise on other aspects of public interest.

Your support could bring these factors to light and highlight the need for alternative, more effective measures to improve road safety in Ireland. Please lend your voice to this cause by signing this petition.
