Halt the Proposed Residential Development in Lyle Creek Flood Zone, Conover, NC

The Issue

Recently, True Homes proposed a residential development on 49 acres along County Home Road. Currently, the land is zoned for low density single family homes. The current zoning would allow lot sizes similar to the surrounding neighborhoods of Wagner Pointe and Indian Springs. However, the development company recently requested that the land be rezoned for 167 houses on approximately 27 acres of the land. This means that each home will be situated on only 1/10th of an acre, cramming residents into a small space with potentially disastrous consequences.

The situation becomes even more dire when you consider the nature of the 49-acre parcel. This land is not just empty space; it is filled with lush forests, wildlife, and a crucial riparian buffer that shields existing homes located directly behind the plot from flooding. Developing this land will not only destroy this vital riparian barrier but also expose our homes to increased flooding, endangering our property and the safety of our families. The financial strain of this potential flood damage will only worsen the challenges faced by families already struggling in this uncertain economy. Additionally, any development along the creek will impact stormwater and Lyle Creek's water quality.

We cannot stand idly by while an out-of-county development company threatens to irreparably damage our community and natural surroundings. It is imperative that we take a stand and urge our local leaders to reconsider this ill-conceived development proposal. We understand the need for development, but it must be done responsibly and with consideration for the long-term impacts on our community and environment. We urge the city of Conover to reject this proposed development and instead focus on preserving the quiet charm and pristine nature that defines our community. Let's protect our homes, our environment, and our future. The clock is ticking. Join us in signing this petition to voice our opposition to this reckless development proposal.

Together, we can send a clear message to Conover City Council that the well-being of our community and the preservation of our environment must be prioritized over profit-driven development interests. Please show up to voice your concerns to Conover's City Council as they make their decision at a public hearing at Conover City Hall on Monday, March 4th at 6pm. This decision impacts our entire community, not just those who live along Lyle creek.
