Halt the Proposed Development on St Ann’s Hill/Twynersh Meadows

Halt the Proposed Development on St Ann’s Hill/Twynersh Meadows
The Issue
As a long-term resident of Chertsey, I consider myself fortunate to have access to the beautiful countryside and green belt areas that surround our community. St Ann’s Hill/Twynersh Meadows, opposite Pyrcroft Grange, has been a haven for wildlife and a cherished landscape for residents, visitors, and travellers alike. Lush with greenery and rich in biodiversity, it truly epitomizes the unique charm of Chertsey.
However, this idyllic setting is now under threat, with a proposed development project by Roger Mugford and Pegasus Group looming perilously. The project would establish a solar farm, an electric vehicle charging facility, a café, and a parking area. While such projects might indeed have their place in today’s world, placing them on this treasured plot of Green Belt land is nothing short of devastating. The introduction of 2-metre fencing would effectively isolate a once accessible area of natural beauty.
Chertsey has already seen its fair share of new builds, gradually gnawing away at the surrounding countryside to meet contemporary needs. Green Belt land is designated for a reason, primarily to stop urban sprawl and to protect the countryside from inappropriate development. By prioritising profiteering over environmental concerns, we risk enhancing the already glaring issue of countryside loss, an issue that has seen a startling 64% increase in the last decade in the UK (source: Countryside Charity UK Data).
Ironically, while the solar farm aims to contribute to clean energy initiatives, it stands to drastically disrupt and potentially destroy the area's existing ecosystem. The harmful impact on local wildlife cannot be overstated, with potentially irreversible consequences.
Our demand is simple - halt the proposed development on the St Ann’s Hill/Twynersh Meadows. Let’s safeguard our countryside, protect our wildlife, and maintain the unique identity of Chertsey. Every signature on this petition brings us a step closer to preserving our precious green belt land. Please sign now and let your voice be heard.
