Halt the Proposed Construction of Six New Canals on River Indus
The Issue

Sindhi, our beautiful homeland, is facing a dire threat. We, the proud representatives from the Jeay Sindh Student Fedretion JSSF Sindh university Chapter, have been stirred into action. As Sindhis, we live as lower riparians, with our lives interwoven with the state of our rivers, pillars that conserve our unique culture, drive our economy, and maintain our environment. We express our staunch opposition to the cynical plan of establishing six new canals on River Indus and other lifeline rivers.
These rivers are not mere waterways to us; they are lifelines. They symbolize our heritage, sustain our livelihoods, and form the basis of our survival. In a land where water scarcity is already at 60%, these new projects can push us over the brink. It's not about the balance between need and growth; it's about survival.
If allowed, these projects will have catastrophic impacts on the ecology of our motherland, and we stand united against them. This isn't just a local issue; it concerns all of us, irrespective of where we currently reside. Construction plans such as these disregard the rights of lower riparians, posing a mortal threat to our way of life.
We urge you to lend your support to protect our rivers, our culture, and our way of life. The ecology and heritage of Sindhi are at stake, along with the basic right to water for thousands of individuals. Please sign this petition to halt the proposed construction of the six new canals on River Indus. Stand with us in this fight for our lives and livelihoods.

As evident from the map, the Cholistan Canal project, comprising the Greater and Smaller Cholistan plans, aims to settle 72 lakh acres of land. The project spans from the Sutlej River to the Indus River, utilizing the Inter-Ror Canal. In 2022, the federal government and WAPDA constructed this massive project on the Sutlej River, anticipating significant flood flows. However, it is crucial to note that the Sutlej River was ceded to India by General Ayub, and without a substantial flood from India, the river's water does not flow towards Pakistan. Consequently, the water for this project will be diverted from the Indus River through inter-rover canals. Notably, all six canals primarily draw water from the Indus River. According to international law, such projects cannot be undertaken without the consent of Sindh. Nevertheless, the authorities are forcibly pushing forward with these projects, obtaining a certificate from IRSA through an amendment to the Act, which is effectively destroying the Indus River. It is essential to highlight that the Indus River is a vital resource for Sindh, and any alterations to its flow or water usage can have severe consequences for the province's ecosystem and inhabitants. The fact that these projects are being implemented without Sindh's consent raises significant concerns about the federal government's disregard for the province's rights and the potential long-term damage to the Indus River.
