The issue

Personal Story:

As a resident of Stonnington, I've always appreciated our community's careful balance between maintaining safety and allowing us the convenience of efficient travel. The recent proposal to reduce speed limits to 30KM in our neighbourhood streets comes as a concerning shift from that balance.

These adjustments, I believe, not only fail to offer the promised benefits but also impose unnecessary financial burdens on us, the residents, who will end up footing the bill for new street signs, a costly measure that could be directed towards more impactful community projects.

Key Concerns:

1. **Lack of Evident Benefits**: Studies have shown that reducing speed limits does not significantly decrease accident rates in residential areas like ours. In fact, the current speed limits have not posed any documented safety issues worthy of such an overhaul.

2. **Financial Implications**: Implementing new 30KM signs will incur costs that will ultimately come from our pockets, as taxpayers. These funds could be better allocated towards improving local infrastructure, supporting community events, or enhancing public amenities.

3. **Inconvenience and Inefficiency**: Lowering speed limits tends to extend commute times unnecessarily, leading to potential frustrations and inefficiencies, especially for those who rely on timely travel for their daily routines.

Alternative Solutions:

We propose the council considers other methods to enhance road safety and community welfare, such as improved pedestrian crossings, better road markings, and increased community education on road safety, all of which have proven effective in improving overall safety without incurring excessive costs.
