Halt the Operation of a "Low-Barrier" Homeless Shelter Next Door to Our Childcare Center

The Issue

As educators, our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of our children. The city's decision to operate a low-barrier homeless shelter across from our childcare center at 406 W Cesar E Chavez Blvd. location has raised significant concerns for us. We believe this exposes our children to unpredictable behavior that may not be suitable for their young minds.

It is important to note that we are not against providing support for the homeless; on the contrary, we believe in humanitarian efforts and understand that shelters play a crucial role in aiding those less fortunate. However, placing such an establishment directly opposite a childcare center is questionable.

According to data from National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH), there were approximately 2,255 people experiencing homelessness on any given day in Texas as of January 2020. While it's essential these individuals receive help and support, it's equally vital that we consider the impact on surrounding communities - particularly when young children are involved.

We urge city officials to reconsider this location and find an alternative site where both parties' needs can be met without compromising each other’s safety or peace of mind.

Low Barrier Shelter Definition: A emergency shelter that does not require any of the following for a client to stay at the shelter: (i) criminal background checks, (ii) credit checks or income verification, (iii) program participation, (iv) sobriety, or (v) identification.
