Why this petition matters

Started by Adam Latham

This petition calls for the immediate halt of the notice to vacate which was sent to 18 staff and faculty currently living in university rental housing. This group includes highly accomplished teachers, scholars, and colleagues who have worked tirelessly for years to perform the essential work of our institution. The policy devised to identify tenants for non-renewal disproportionately disadvantages some of the most vulnerable members of our community, particularly single women and people of color. Owing to the inaccessibility of the Sewanee housing market to those living on university salaries and years of refusal by University administration to address the problem of insufficient rental housing, there are no realistic housing alternatives for these valued members of our community. We find this eviction immoral, irresponsible, disrespectful, and unequivocally contrary to the Christian principles of our Episcopal institution. Anything short of an immediate halt to these evictions flies squarely in the face of our university motto, Ecce Quam Bonum: Behold how good and pleasant it is when kindred dwell together in unity.
