Halt the Introduction of Yondr Pouches at Kingston High School
The Issue
Personally, as a student at Kingston High School, I cannot underscore enough the importance of unrestricted access to one's personal device during school hours. This simple function allows me to maintain direct communication with my mother instead of relying on the school's phone, which can impose an unnecessary barrier in cases of personal urgency.
Proponents argue that Yondr pouches – smartphone-locking devices proposed for implementation in our school – might enhance student focus by limiting smartphone distractions. However, this seemingly beneficial tool stands to compromise essential aspects of students' lives, specifically safety and mental health, vastly overriding its intended benefits. Apart from impeding direct communication with parents, these pouches may inadvertently contribute to significantly increased stress and anxiety levels among students, impacting their overall mental health.
A study by the Pew Research Center found that 48% of parents have used their cell phone to check up on their teenager during school hours (source: Pew Research Center). Besides, personal mobile devices serve as critical tools during emergencies, as underscored by the 2018 Federal Commission on School Safety report (source: Federal Commission on School Safety Report 2018).
As such, we implore the administration of Kingston High School to reconsider its intended introduction of Yondr pouches for the upcoming school year. Students' safety, mental wellbeing, and the concerns of parents must take precedence over attempts to manage smartphone distractions. We beseech concerned stakeholders – parents, students, educators – from Kingston, NY, USA, to lend their voice to this crucial cause: by demonstrating collective concern, we hope to effect the change we seek. Sign this petition if you stand with us in preserving safe and healthy learning environments for all students.
