Halt the Inhumane Culling of Brumbies in NSW

The issue

I am deeply moved by the plight of the Brumbies, wild horses that have served us faithfully during wars and labor. These majestic creatures are currently facing an unjust cull in the snowy highlands of New South Wales. The cull is not only cruel but also dismissive of their historical significance and contribution to our society.

The Brumbies are descendants of escapee, released or lost horses, dating back to the early European settlement. They've become a part of Australia's folklore, symbolizing our spirit of freedom and resilience. However, they're now considered pests due to their impact on native vegetation.

While it's true that overpopulation can lead to environmental issues, there must first be an accurate count. Once numbers are properly understood, any excess population should be managed in a humane way, rather than resorting to mass slaughter. There are alternative methods such as fertility control or relocation which should be explored and included in the management of these animals.

According to RSPCA Australia (2019), non-lethal methods should always be prioritized when managing wild animal populations. Their report emphasizes that any action taken should minimize suffering - a principle that the RSPCA seem to have forgotten with regards to these noble beasts. Yet now they are in full support for the aerial cull to start in March 2024. Being cut down by an average of 7.5 bullets per animal is not a humane way to kill an animal. The RSPCA have clearly forgotten their roll.

It's time for us Australians - who owe so much to these horses - to stand up for them. Let us urge our government officials in NSW and Victoria to stop this brutal cull immediately, explore humane alternatives for population control, and treat these animals with respect they deserve.
