The Issue

Living in the close-knit communities of Moapa Valley, we now face a grave threat to our quality of life, environment, and overall character of our beloved area due to the proposed Bridgesource Mine and cement processing plant. Our homes, the places where we raise our children and where we've established roots, stand on the brink of an irreversible transformation. The facts simply can’t be ignored; studies have repeatedly shown the negative impacts of such mining activities on the surrounding communities and environment.

Potential hazards such as toxic emission from the processing plant, an undesirable by-product of these operations, pose a genuine threat to our health. Our once clean, rural air will be riddled with these emissions and with dust from the mine, affecting current and future residents, wildlife and even the vegetation and agriculture for at least 80 years, the proposed timeline for the project.

Moreover, the proposed extensive light system will inevitably lead to light pollution and steal the starlit night we cherish in this rural area.

Furthermore, we worry about the welfare of the Muddy River, the supplier of irrigation water in our area. This river and its ecosystem could be harshly affected, with the quality and quantity of water at risk due to potential pollution from mining operations.

Most importantly, we fear that not only our peaceful, small-town charm, that makes Moapa Valley unique, is at peril, but also our beautiful and unique landscape, fragile desert wildlife and rich history as well. This project is not just a change; it's a profound alteration to the spirit of our communities.

We, the undersigned, urge the Clark County Commissioners to deny the zoning changes proposed for the Bridgestone cement facilities to be located at Moapa, Nevada near I-15 and Lewis Ranch Road (APNS: 041-07-000-002, 041-07-000-005, 041-07-000-007, 042-12-000-005 and 042-12-000-010).

We believe changing the zoning designation from Residential to Heavy Industrial would not only allow for construction of the cement production facilities and pave the way for the associated massive surface mine, but would also promote further future industrialization of our residential-based community.

We urge the County Commission to carefully consider the potential consequences of this proposed zone change and deny the application. We believe that our quality of life would be drastically changed for the worse if this zone change were passed. This proposed mine and processing plant would be too close to our residential areas. We believe the current zoning is appropriate for this area and aligns with the area’s vision for future development.
