Halt the Establishment of a Rock Quarry in Walker County, GA

Halt the Establishment of a Rock Quarry in Walker County, GA
The Issue
I cherish the tranquility and stunning natural beauty that Walker County offers—just like you. This peace is now under threat due to plans to establish a rock quarry at the intersection of Oakton Rd and Ridgeway Rd. This proposed change threatens not only our way of life but also our environment.
As of now, the proposed quarry has satisfied all necessary documents with the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission and it has moved to the Environmental Protection Division of the GA Department of Natural Resources at the state level for completion.
The introduction of a rock quarry would inevitably lead to water and air pollution. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), quarries can generate large amounts of dust particles which can harm both human health and wildlife. Moreover, they are known sources of noise pollution which can disrupt local ecosystems as well as residents' quality of life.
The Walker County ordinance Sec. 22-148. does allow mining in A-1 General Agriculture but not industry or commercial.
(13) Mining. The types of uses in this group include borrow pits, surface mining, rock quarries, strip mining and any extraction activity. Buildings and businesses for the refinement, processing, packaging and transportation of extracted materials are included in this group of uses.
The land on Oakton Rd and Ridgeway is zoned for general agricultural use— which seems like an indication that it should be preserved for farming activities that support local economies while maintaining ecological balance—but it is not so in Walker County. Instead, a rock quarry can be passed through without so much as notice for residents of the community, or the chance to have our opinions heard.
Property owners should have the right to do what they want on their property, to an extent but not when it negatively affects hundreds of other people. That is why we don’t have strip clubs, bars, or liquor stores near schools.
We must protect Walker County's natural beauty, its residents' quality of life, and uphold laws designed to safeguard such areas from harmful industrial activities. Let us stand together against this rock quarry proposal by signing this petition today!
We have the right to have our voices heard!
