Halt the destruction of wildlife habitat in Colbee Park
The issue
Colbee Park, nestled in McGraths Hill, is not just a patch of greenery; it's a crucial sanctuary for wildlife and a cherished part of our local community. Unfortunately, the lush she-oak trees that form the backbone of this ecosystem are under threat. I, like many residents of Hawkesbury, was shocked to discover the sheer number of trees now marked with yellow dots, signaling their removal for the proposed Stage 2 soccer field and lighting upgrades.
These magnificent mature she-oak trees support an entire ecosystem, providing habitats for countless species. Birds, insects, and small mammals rely on these trees not only for shelter but as places to breed, thrive, and survive. The removal of these trees would not only disrupt these species but could have a cascading effect on the biodiversity of the area.
Despite assurances from the Hawkesbury City Council, it’s evident from our inspections that these planned removals are more extensive than initially communicated. This lack of transparency and disregard for our local environment is deeply concerning. As custodians of our community, we cannot allow unchecked development to destroy our natural heritage for generations to come.
We are calling on the Hawkesbury City Council to immediately halt the removal of these trees. We urge them to consider alternative development plans that would preserve these critical wildlife habitats while still fulfilling the community's recreational needs. This could involve the redesign of the soccer field layout to work around existing trees or implementing advanced lighting solutions that minimize environmental impact.
Every tree in Colbee Park is a sentinel of the area's rich biodiversity. The council must prioritize sustainable development that respects and harmonizes with nature instead of bulldozing it.
