I am personally touched by this issue. My mother ardently believes that the creation of artificial reefs using sunken ships is causing major harm to our oceans. As a voice for her concern, I am raising this petition to call for immediate attention to this issue.

Our oceans are already overwhelmed with challenges like pollution, overfishing, and warming due to climate change. Artificial reefs made from sunken ships may pose an additional threat. According to a study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, these man-made structures could potentially release heavy metals and other harmful substances into the water over time (NOAA, 2019). In an ecosystem as delicate as the ocean, this could have serious impacts on marine life.

We, the friends of marine life and protectors of our oceans, are calling on policy makers to stop the creation of artificial reefs from sunken ships until there is definitive research establishing their long term safety for marine ecosystems. Laws should be amended to ensure that these well-intentioned efforts don’t end up harming the planet they are meant to help.
