I am a lifelong surfer, raised on the waves of Long Beach, New York. I've seen firsthand how human intervention can devastate beloved surfing spots - my local beaches were dredged and forever changed. The dream of riding waves around the world has always been close to my heart, and Teahupoo in Tahiti is one such place that holds a special allure for surfers like me.

However, this unique surfing paradise is under threat. Plans are underway to construct an aluminum viewing tower for the Olympics, which would cause irreversible damage to one of the world's most unique reefs located there. This isn't just about preserving a surfing spot; it's about protecting an ecosystem and respecting the people who call this place home.

Reefs are beautiful and vital for marine life as they provide food and shelter. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), healthy coral reefs contribute $3.4 billion annually to the US economy through tourism and recreation alone (NOAA 2021). Destroying them for temporary structures is not sustainable nor respectful towards nature or local communities.

The destruction of this reef will have far-reaching impacts beyond just changing a landscape; it will disrupt livelihoods, endanger species dependent on these habitats, and alter recreational activities like surfing that hold cultural significance for many people.
