The Issue

As a local resident of Ellington, I am witnessing an unnecessary intrusion into our beloved town - the planned construction of a Dollar General store on West Road. This intrusion is not just an addition to the several Dollar General stores available in each neighbouring town, but a threat to our precious farmland and natural scenery. This tranquil environment is cherished by us, the residents, who adore the rural charm of our humble town.

The proposed location for this development is currently farmland, an invaluable resource offering numerous benefits. The environmental impact of losing farm land is immense, including biodiversity loss and increased carbon dioxide levels. Furthermore, this Dollar General store would undeniably become an eyesore, detracting from the natural beauty of Ellington.

Moreover, the products offered in these stores are not of satisfactory quality, often overpriced, and do not contribute significantly to our local economic growth. According to Retail Dive, Dollar General Stores contribute little to the local economy compared to locally owned businesses, as the majority of profits are not reinvested back into the local community.

We strongly urge the town planning committee to reconsider this development, taking into account the wider environmental and social impacts it would have. We urge residents of Ellington and surrounding communities to join us in saying no to the proposed Dollar General development. Your signature can help preserve the charm, beauty, and environment of our town. Act now and sign this petition.
