Halt the Construction of Battery Storage Hub in Thorniewood Community

The Issue

My name is Barry McCluskey , a local councillor for Ward 14 Thorniewood. I'm deeply worried about the safety of our community regarding the proposed construction of a battery storage hub. This facility is being planned for green belt lands, dangerously close to residential homes and our local schools. But what heightens the danger is the vicinity to a main gas pipe.

The threats that come with such a project are not to be taken lightly. Battery storage hubs house significant chemical energy and, in case of an accident or fire, the consequences would be catastrophic. Furthermore, the construction of such facilities disrupts the local ecology, which we have been diligently protecting. These aspects are crucial to the lifestyle and wellness of our community, and we can’t overlook the safety of our children and fellow citizens.

Hence, we call upon the Planning Department to reconsider their decision and halt the construction of this battery storage hub. As alternative proposals, could we not consider brownfield sites or areas distanced from high-risk installations like the gas main pipe? Also, measures should be taken to explore cleaner, safer energy storage options. We understand the need for energy storage solutions for our growing city, but we firmly believe there are safer, better ways of achieving these goals.
