Halt the Closure of Horse Tracks and Barns at Dixie Downs/Washington Legacy Park

Halt the Closure of Horse Tracks and Barns at Dixie Downs/Washington Legacy Park

My husband, John Brocklebank, operates the largest horse training business at Washington Legacy Park. With over 14 dedicated employees and nurturing and training up to 100 horses per year, our livelihood, along with the welfare of our horses, is at stake due to the proposed closure of the horse tracks and barns at Dixie Downs.

This decision not only affects our family and our business, but also has broader consequences for more than 150 horses that rely on these facilities for their wellbeing. Moreover, it threatens the livelihoods of many trainers who are also dependent on the Legacy Park facilities.

The horse industry in our community significantly contributes to the local economy. It yields to financial inflows from the numerous visitors who come to enjoy horse races, it supports local jobs and businesses. An abrupt closure of horse tracks and barns at Dixie Downs would undoubtedly disrupt this economic stream and harm local businesses.

Aside from the economic effects, it's important to consider the cultural implications. Our park, Dixie Downs/Washington Legacy Park, holds a vital place in the fabric of our community, serving as a local historical landmark that brings joy, recreation, and competition to many.

Considering these impacts, it is imperative that we call on the appropriate authorities to halt the closure of the horse tracks and barns at Dixie Downs/Washington Legacy Park. We call for a review of this decision and a reassessment of the implications.

This barn is considered a training camp for more prestigious quarter horses and thoroughbreds in the nation.

We therefore urge you to sign this petition and support this cause - in defense of our livelihoods, community and the rich tradition of horse racing in our town.
