Halt the $30,000 Playground Project at Lincoln Heights Public School
The Issue
Lincoln Heights Public School plans to build a $30,000 playground for the primary students. This raises significant concerns about how the school is choosing to spend their money. The teachers have recently been informed of a paper shortage at the school, and students are suffering from this. According to a study by the US Department of Education, 94 percent of teachers spend their own money on school supplies, and a separate study by the National Education Association states that teachers spend between $500 and $750 on school supplies yearly, out-of-pocket. While other schools are going to Toronto or Ottawa for their Grade 8 trip, Lincoln Heights is likely to just head to a local place, which is crazy considering less than 5 years ago, they went to Toronto, a Jays game and Ripley's Aquarium. They are also trying to buy new jerseys, after the boys' and girls' basketball teams had to share jerseys. With those previous figures in mind, it's shocking that a school could fundraise $30,000 for a playground, especially since they recently got a primary playground within the last 10 years. This has been a multi-year project, and they've been fundraising since last year. The funds they have already accumulated can help fund the teachers, a grade 8 trip, and any future needed funds. They recently built a great gender-neutral washroom, so more of that would be great. Sign this if you want to see this school evolve.
