Halt the 100 ft Cell Towers in CHV Green Spaces

Halt the 100 ft Cell Towers in CHV Green Spaces
The Issue
HELP! Our beloved Cherry Hills Village in Colorado is under threat due to proposed cell tower construction within our parks. Currently, 3 100ft (8 stories) structures are proposed to built in CHV public spaces (learn more here: http://www.cherryhillsvillage.com/611/Cell-Coverage-Renderings ) These green spaces, the lifeblood of our community, are at risk of being overshadowed by large urban infrastructure. The World Health Organization speaks to potential health risks related to the radiofrequency fields produced by cell towers (WHO, 2020). They are also aesthetically disruptive, likely decreasing property values well beyond the immediate vicinity (A. Jones, Real Estate Analyst, 2018). Our community deserves to keep their green spaces intact, free from these pollutants. Together, we can ensure that our parks continue to be a place for us to escape, relax, and enjoy ourselves. Sign this petition and let our local authorities know that we say no to 100 ft cell tower construction in our parks, and to re-review options more in line with CHV values.
NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE RESIDENTS
The close proximity to homes in neighborhoods, specifically Woody Hollow Park/Three Pond Park, would be an intrusion into the privacy of the residents. Workers performing routine maintenance would have direct views into homes.
Wireless companies require access for maintenance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That maintenance (often done at night) brings work crews, trucks with lifts, radios, lights and noise that will travel through neighborhoods and affect many neighbors.
NEGATIVE IMPACT ON PROPERTY VALUES
The health hazards and unsightliness of these installations will have a negative impact on property values. The perceived threat alone would lower property values. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines categorize cell towers with "hazards and nuisances," and HUD requires its certified appraisers to take the presence of nearby cell towers into consideration when determining the value of single-family residential properties. Studies have shown that proximity to a cell tower can lower property values from 5 to 25%. Once there are comps in the neighborhood that are lower, it can lower your home value, even if you can’t see the tower from your home. Having beautiful parks near your home helps increase home values. There is a reason why Cherry Hills property values remain high - serene areas with no commercialization. https://www.denverpost.com/2023/08/25/discover-cherry-hills-village-mansions-on-spacious-lots-with-easy-access-to-denver-real-estate-voices/
NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY
Allowing these excessively large cell antennas is not necessary and is not the only option. If one carrier can blanket the neighborhood with cell antennas, what is to stop other wireless companies from doing the same? This will set a precedent that is a risk to any resident, no matter how far you currently live from the proposed tower locations. - And once a cell site is established, our ability to protect ourselves from additional hazardous exposure of more installations becomes more of a challenge. Are residential streets shaded by canopies of cell antennas what we want for our future neighborhoods? Also, these towers are so large that they will actually allow the carrier to serve customers well outside CHV boundaries into other municipalities - these huge towers are what THEY want because it costs less for them.
HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO WIRELESS EMISSIONS
”There are many population studies linking living within 500m of large cell towers with multiple adverse health effects in humans, particularly in developing children” - Ari Ballonoff, CHV resident and Radiation Oncologist. While the FCC claims that wireless facilities are safe, the U.S. Department of the Interior states that “the electromagnetic radiation standards used by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) continue to be based on thermal heating, a criterion now nearly 30 years out of date and inapplicable today.” Other countries now limit public exposure to levels far lower than the standards currently set by the FCC.
Studies have shown that even at low levels of radiation, there is evidence of biological damage, brain tumors, cancer, weakened immune function, childhood leukemia, reduced sperm count and ovarian follicles. Also included in studies are:
- Spontaneous Abortion
- Genetic Mutations
- Memory disruptions
- Hindered learning
- ADD
- Insomnia
- Brain disorders
- Hormonal imbalances
- Infertility
- Dementia
- Heart complications
In May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the type of radiation that cell towers emit as a Class 2B carcinogen, meaning “possibly carcinogenic to humans”, the same category as lead and DDT.
The American Association of Pediatrics raises concerns that children may be more vulnerable than adults “because of the potentially greater susceptibility of their developing nervous systems; in addition, their brain tissue is more conductive, radio frequency radiation penetration is greater relative to head size, and they will have a longer lifetime of exposure than adults.”
MORE NEGATIVES THAN POSITIVES
From a safety perspective, even with low or no service, you can always call 911 - Yes, you can even call 911 without a SIM card. This includes deactivated phones and phones that aren't supported by a carrier. Check with your current carriers for details and ensure your family is aware.
If you so choose, you can buy personal cell boosters that go on your house with very limited RF. You can even buy cell phone boosters for your car. You can also get a land line in your home for relatively low cost.
Smaller cell towers throughout the neighborhood are possible - neighboring cities use these - they may be tied to existing power lines, lamp posts, flag poles, etc.
Do we really need to destroy our neighborhoods and parks, risking the health of our neighbors, for a huge cell tower?
