Halt Regressive Rollback of DEI Programs at the University of Michigan

The Issue

The University of Michigan Board of Regents will vote on whether to roll back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs on Thursday 12/6, posing a significant threat to an inclusive campus where all are welcome and valued. These programs increase faculty and student body diversity, while ensuring that women, students of color, LGBTQ and disabled students are supported so they may thrive. In fact, all students benefit from a well-rounded education and a campus that mirrors the world we live in.

A reversal on DEI jeopardizes the university's commitment to developing an inclusive environment, which research shows is critical to students' academic success and well-being. A study by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) shows that institutions with strong DEI programs help students feel valued, leading to enhanced academic performance, lower dropout rates, and improved critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

As parents of UMich students and alumni, we urge the University of Michigan Board of Regents to uphold their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
