Halt Police Harassment of Corpus Christi's Homeless Population

Halt Police Harassment of Corpus Christi's Homeless Population
The Issue
This grievance is not theoretical, but personal, attached to countless individuals who are bearing the brunt of routine police harassment. People are losing friends and family members, not because they lack means, but because their misfortune makes them targets. In Corpus Christi, our homeless population is being victimized, not served or protected by our police force. If we aim to uphold the principles of justice and humanity, we must advocate for those who lack the voice to do so.
In our city, an estimated 1,068 individuals are homeless on any given night, according to the Corpus Christi Homeless Issue Partnership. Our city isn't providing adequate services for the homeless and police harassment exacerbates their plight. This exacerbation leads to the criminalization and the dehumanization of our fellow citizens.
We, therefore, pledge to fight for the rights of our homeless community. We demand the city of Corpus Christi re-evaluates its approach. Instead of criminalizing homelessness, the city should invest in mental health services, substance abuse clinics, and affordable housing programs. The heavy-handed policing we're currently witnessing does not solve the root causes of homelessness - it only piles on more suffering.
Everyone deserves respect and help when they're down. The homeless are as much part of Corpus Christi as anyone else. Sign this petition and let's demand justice, dignity, and real solutions for the homeless people in Corpus Christi.
